Are you planning to go on a hike with your friends this weekend? Beginner or not, here’s a friendly reminder to double-check everything that you need before braving the high mountains. In my experience, it’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared! I’ve experienced not bringing enough water on one of my hikes. Thankfully one of my friends brought extra water! So, if you don’t want to be like me, scroll down and check our list of must-have safety equipment that you should bring on your next hike.
Here are 5 Must-Have Safety Equipment to Bring on Your Hike
FIRST-AID KIT
Aside from bringing snacks and water, the next important thing to bring would be a first-aid kit. Why? ‘Cause, you’ll never know what would happen. You might think this is totally unnecessary ‘cause everyone will be super careful, but that’s where you’re wrong. Accidents are totally unpredictable, especially when you’re outdoors! Plus, it doesn’t have to be a bag full of medicine and medical equipment. Just grab a small pouch, and put in a couple of band-aids, bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, allergy meds, and other medications that you need for your health. This won’t even take up much of your bag space!
HEADLAMP or FLASHLIGHT
Doesn’t matter if you’re going on a day or night hike, always bring a headlamp or flashlight with you just in case you end up getting lost on the trail or when the sun starts to set. So, instead of panicking, put that flashlight in your bag now! Also, some trails also have caves, so a headlamp or a flashlight would be pretty useful to enjoy the whole hike!
I highly recommend the Raylight LED Flashlight. It gives extra 20% output than T6 LED and it's very sturdy and durable too! It’s also waterproof so I had no problems when rain suddenly starts to fall. It also has 5 different light modes, which is good for warning other drivers to take caution. I got it here.
WHISTLE
A whistle can be very useful when you get lost or immobilized and would want to get someone’s attention. The best things about this are that it’s small, it won’t ever run out of battery, and it won’t need reception for you to use it. You can just hang it on your bag so you can always keep it with you. Other
MAP or COMPASS
Remember, not all hiking trails have good signal reception. Some don’t even have one! This is where a map or compass would come in useful, especially if you and your friends get lost and you’re not familiar with the trail. Also, although a map and compass are very useful in times like these, please also make sure you know how to use one as it can be tricky if it’s your first time navigating using it.
MULTI-TOOL
A multi-tool is a small piece of equipment that usually includes a knife, screwdriver, small scissors, and many more. This is very straightforward to use and can be pretty handy if you need to cut something, help with first-aid, prepare food, and many other things. You’ll be surprised how useful this small piece of equipment actually is.
