If you own a trucking company that operates at night, you might want to get a reversing camera. A recent research conducted by road safety experts at Monash University has found that overnight truck drivers are as much at risk of an accident as mid-range drink-drivers. According to the researchers, despite a significant decline in the number of serious road accidents across the country, the rate of accidents involving trucks has remained high over the last ten years.
The researchers blamed sleepiness for these unfortunate incidents. They stressed out that truck drivers who drove overnight for more than three hours in a row are more likely to get into accidents as compared to those who are scheduled for day trips. In addition, the researchers have also discovered that drivers with less experience and those who do not use modern technology, such as anti-lock braking systems and a reversing camera kit, have a significantly higher risk of being in a serious road accident.
It is common knowledge that overnight driving was the industry norm among long-distance truck drivers. John Waltis, a long-time truck driver, said 70% of the industry are doing it at night while only 30% are making long-haul trips during the day. What's more, some of the trucks operating at night have drivers who didn't get quality sleep prior to their shift. This, combined with the lack of a reversing camera, contributes to the growing number of heavy vehicle accidents in the country.
Lead researcher Mark Stevenson said accidents involving heavy vehicles will be reduced if long-haul truck trips were not scheduled for the early hours of the morning. Instead, drivers should operate their vehicles from 6am to midday and take breaks after driving for two hours straight. Equipping trucks with a reversing camera kit and using available technology can also help drivers prevent accidents as they make it easier for them to handle their vehicles.
If you own a trucking company, it is wise to heed the experts' advice to avoid accidents that can potentially lead to a loss of life and profits. If changing the schedule of the majority of your long-haul trips from night time to daytime isn't possible, you should at least invest in electronic safety devices, like a reversing camera.
With a reverse camera, reversing and manoeuvring heavy vehicles won't be too much of a hassle for your truck drivers. What's more, you can help them avoid accidents that can put their lives in jeopardy. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Therefore, you should equip your trucks with reversing camera and employ all safety measures to ensure the safety of your drivers.
